The CAF (Caisse d’Allocations Familiales) is the government agency that manages most social benefits in France: housing allowances, wage supplements, family benefits and more. As a legal resident, you may be entitled to these benefits regardless of your nationality.
Housing benefits: APL, ALS and ALF
There are three types of housing benefit, but you can only receive one:
- APL (Aide Personnalisée au Logement): the most common. Applies to housing that meets a government agreement (certain social and private properties covered by a specific agreement (a standard lease alone is not enough)).
- ALS (Allocation de Logement Sociale): for those who do not qualify for APL or ALF.
- ALF (Allocation de Logement Familiale): for families with dependent children or expecting a baby.
How much can you receive?
The amount depends on several factors: your income, family situation, rent amount and geographic zone. The CAF uses a scale that is revised every year. There is no guaranteed fixed amount: entitlement depends on individual circumstances and should be checked using the official simulator.
You can estimate your benefit using the official simulator: CAF benefit simulator.
General requirements
- Be a legal resident in France.
- Have a rental contract in your name.
- The dwelling must be your primary residence.
- You must not be related to the landlord.
- Your income must not exceed certain thresholds.
Prime d’activité: a wage top-up for modest earners
The prime d’activité is a monthly supplement for workers (employees or self-employed) whose income falls below a certain threshold. The amount depends on household income and composition; a specific entitlement cannot be inferred from salary alone.
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Reside in France on a stable basis.
- Be working (employed or self-employed) and earning income from your activity.
- EU/EEA and Swiss nationals must have residence rights and have lived in France for at least 3 months when applying. Other nationals generally need to have held a residence permit authorising work for 5 years, with exceptions (resident card, refugees, stateless people, subsidiary protection and certain single parents of children under 3).
Important: the prime d’activité is not paid automatically. You must apply for it through the CAF and report your income every quarter.
Family benefits
If you have dependent children living in France, you may be entitled to various benefits:
- Allocations familiales: a monthly payment from the second child onwards. No income requirement (but the amount varies based on your resources).
- Complément familial: for families with at least 3 children aged 3 or older.
- PAJE (Prestation d’Accueil du Jeune Enfant): birth or adoption bonus plus a monthly supplement for children under 3.
- ARS (Allocation de Rentrée Scolaire): a yearly back-to-school allowance for children aged 6–18, paid in August.
How to apply for CAF benefits
- Create your account at caf.fr or using the “Caf – Mon Compte” mobile app.
- Submit your application online for the benefit you need (housing, prime d’activité, etc.).
- Upload the required documents: ID, RIB (bank details), rental contract, proof of income.
- Wait for a response: processing times vary by CAF office and individual case; track your application in your account.
- Report your income every quarter: RSA and prime d’activité quarterly declarations may be pre-filled using the montant net social; check and complete them. Missing a required declaration may suspend payment.
Common mistakes
- Not applying because you don’t know about the benefits: APL and prime d’activité are not paid automatically — you have to apply.
- Forgetting the quarterly income report: if you miss the quarterly declaration, the CAF suspends your payments.
- Providing incorrect information: the CAF cross-checks data with the tax authorities and Sécurité sociale. Mistakes can result in overpayments that you will have to repay.
- Thinking foreigners cannot receive APL: Entitlement depends on residence status, resources and the property; nationality alone does not guarantee payment. Non-EU nationals also qualify, subject to certain residence conditions.
