Privacy policy

FranceCompass respects the privacy of its readers. This policy describes personal data that may be processed when visiting francecompass.eu, contacting the project or, once enabled, viewing advertising. You do not need an account to read our guides.

1. Controller and contact

Public project name: FranceCompass (editorial name). Public location: Lyon, France. Privacy contact: contact@francecompass.eu.

FranceCompass is an editorial name, not a separate legal entity. The legal identity of the data controller must be completed wherever required; using a public pseudonym alone does not replace the obligations under Article 13 of the GDPR.

2. Data processed

  • Technical data: IP address, access date and time, requested pages, basic browser information and server logs that the hosting provider may process to operate and secure the website.
  • Correspondence: your email address, message and metadata required to respond if you contact us.
  • Cookies and identifiers: strictly necessary technical items and, if enabled, analytics and advertising technologies according to your choices.
  • Planned advertising: after Google AdSense is enabled, Google and partners identified in the consent manager may process device information, identifiers, cookies and advertising-related data.

We do not ask for identity documents, medical information, bank details or social security numbers through the website. Please avoid sending unnecessary sensitive information by email.

3. Purposes and legal bases

  • Website operation and security: legitimate interests under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, as applicable.
  • Responding to messages: legitimate interests in handling enquiries or pre-contractual steps where relevant.
  • Advertising and measurement requiring consent: informed consent where legally required under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR.
  • Legal obligations: Article 6(1)(c) GDPR where applicable.

4. Hosting, recipients and transfers

FranceCompass uses website hosting services purchased through Namecheap. The hosting provider and necessary technical services may process operational and security data and logs. We do not sell contact email lists.

If Google AdSense is enabled, Google and the advertising partners named in the consent manager may receive information used to deliver and measure ads. See Google’s privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy and information about partner sites at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Some providers may process data outside the European Economic Area. Where applicable, such processing and transfers must use the safeguards required by law.

5. Google AdSense advertising

We plan to fund part of our content through Google AdSense. Once ads are active, Google and other providers may use cookies or identifiers to display and measure advertising, including based on previous visits where legally permitted.

You can control Google’s ad personalisation at https://myadcenter.google.com/. Turning off personalised ads does not necessarily prevent all non-personalised or limited ads.

6. Cookies and consent

Non-essential trackers requiring consent must not be activated before the visitor makes a valid choice. For relevant regions, a Google consent platform is planned with options to accept, reject and customise choices. When operational, there must also be a way to review and withdraw consent.

You can also use your browser settings. See our cookie policy.

7. Retention

Emails are retained for as long as necessary to handle and reasonably follow up enquiries, or longer where required by law or a claim. Technical log retention depends on hosting and security settings. Advertising identifier retention follows providers’ published periods and the visitor’s choices.

8. Your rights

You may request access, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction of processing and portability where applicable. You may withdraw consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of earlier processing.

Contact contact@francecompass.eu to exercise your rights. You may also lodge a complaint with the French data protection authority, the CNIL.

9. External links and minors

Our articles may link to third-party sites with their own privacy policies. FranceCompass provides general information and is not intended specifically for children.

10. Changes

We will update this policy as services, measurement tools, advertising or processing activities change. The page will show its revision date.
