In France, job offers almost always state the gross annual salary. But between that figure and what actually reaches your bank account there is a significant gap of social contributions and taxes. Understanding the difference is essential for negotiating your salary and planning your budget.
From gross to net: the simplified formula
For a private-sector non-cadre employee, employee social contributions amount to roughly 22% of gross pay. For a cadre (managerial/professional status), they can reach 25%. Therefore:
- Non-cadre: Net before tax ≈ Gross × 0.78
- Cadre: Net before tax ≈ Gross × 0.75
On top of that, the prélèvement à la source (income-tax withholding) is deducted, and its rate depends on your personal tax situation.
Example: €30,000 gross annual salary (non-cadre)
| Item | Annual | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Gross | €30,000 | €2,500 |
| Employee contributions (~22%) | –€6,600 | –€550 |
| Net before tax | €23,400 | €1,950 |
| Illustrative income-tax withholding (assumed amount) | –€1,200 | –€100 |
| Net take-home pay | €22,200 | €1,850 |
What does each contribution fund?
Employee contributions finance your own social protection:
- Assurance vieillesse: your state pension.
- Retraite complémentaire (AGIRC-ARRCO): your mandatory supplementary pension.
- CSG/CRDS: a general social contribution that funds the Sécurité sociale.
- Mutuelle d’entreprise: your company’s supplementary health insurance (employee share).
